Blast kills police officer in Afghan northern Kunduz city

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- A police officer lost his life as a mine planted by militants struck his vehicle in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz Thursday night, police said Friday.

"A mine planted by militants struck a police van killing police officer Abdul Jamil Parwani in third district of Kunduz city on Thursday night," police spokesman Mafozullah Akbari told Xinhua.

Taliban militants captured major parts of Kunduz city on Oct. 3 but were forced to retreat from the city on Oct. 12, according to security officials.

The militants planted countless of mines in parts of the city including residential areas before vacating their positions.
