YANGON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's fishery department has designated some islands in Kyunsu, southern Taninthayi region, as restricted areas for fishing, official media reported Thursday.

The territorial waters near Tharmyar Ami island and Wetphyu Taing island, 15 nautical miles away from Sa Khan Thit village in Kyunsu, will be off-limit for fishing for the first time starting on Oct. 10, the department said, clarifying that the measure is taken to protect the fingerlings near these islands from being caught as fish larvae that develop into fingerlings are hatched near the islands.

The authorities said it will carry out patrol around the restricted areas to make sure there is no illegal fishing, adding that violators will face penalties.

The authorities announced that the activities protecting the aquaculture will be carried out in cooperation with Fauna and Flora International (FFI).
