NEW DELHI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and over two dozen were injured Sunday during a stampede at a political rally in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The stampede took place at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar ground in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, during a rally organized by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

"Today two aged women were killed and more than two dozen others injured during a stampede here," a police official said. "The stampede happened when a huge rush of people were trying to force their entry from gate at the venue."

The stampede triggered melee during the rally.

Officials said the injured were immediately taken to hospital.

Reports said around 100,000 people attended the rally to mark the 10th death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram.

BSP has support base in Uttar Pradesh and following among millions of low-caste Dalits.

Dalits were previously known as untouchables in India and fall at the bottom of India's caste hierarchy. Casteism, though prohibited in India's constitution, is deep-rooted in Indian society, especially in smaller towns and villages.

BSP chief Mayawati is trying to capture power from the ruling Samajwadi Party in next year's local elections in Uttar Pradesh. Enditem
