BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa pays an official visit to China on Oct. 8-12 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The following is a brief profile of the Portuguese prime minister.

Antonio Costa was born in Lisbon in 1961. He studied law in Lisbon in the 1980s, and later took a post-graduate degree in European Studies.

Costa joined the Socialist Party in 1975, and has served as a deputy to the Lisbon municipal council, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of State and Internal Administration, and a Vice President of the European Parliament.

Costa was elected Mayor of Lisbon in 2007, and got re-elected twice in 2009 and 2013.

In November 2014, he was elected Secretary General of the Socialist Party. In November 2015, Costa became the prime minister of Portugal.
