Vietnam detects 2 tons of smuggled ivory

HO CHI MINH CITY, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A port in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City has found over two tons of elephant tusks hidden in timbers, the municipal customs authorities said Friday.

Cutting 12 timbers in two containers at Cat Lai Port in District 2 for thorough checking, customs officers found over two tons of African elephant tusks inside. The tusks worth of tens of millions of U.S. dollars were smuggled from Mozambique.

The timbers belong to a local firm named Dieu Tien Trading and Service Company.
