OSLO, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Norway has exported record breaking seafood worth 65 billion kroner (8.08 billion U.S. dollars) in the first nine months this year, newspaper Aftenposten reported on Thursday.
This is an increase of 26 percent, or 13.2 billion kroner, compared with the same period last year, the report said, quoting statistics from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
September exports marked an all time high, totalling 8.8 billion kroner, an increase of 31 percent, or 2.1 billion kroner from the same month in 2015, it said.
"The value of Norwegian seafood exports have doubled over the past six years. September exports alone are equal to seafood exports for the whole of 1990," said Geir Havard Hanssen, director of communication at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
"Norwegian seafood is a scarce resource in the world market. With stable volumes supporting this growth in demand coupled with high prices for most products and this explains the basis of our record year to date," said Hanssen.
The export price of fresh whole salmon has been 41 percent higher so far this year than in the same period last year.
Morten Lindrupsen, analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council, said that the reason for this is the combination of reduced export volume and high demand for Norwegian salmon.
However, the export volume has increased in the last two months in comparison with the same period last year, which led to some decrease in the salmon price.
"Still, the September price of fresh whole salmon was 12.89 kroner higher than last year, which substantiates the high demand for Norwegian salmon," Lindrupsen said.
Norway has so far this year exported trout for 3 billion kroner, which is an increase of 98 percent, or 1.5 billion kroner, compared to the three quarters of last year. There has also been increase when it comes to the exports of fresh and frozen cod, salted fish, herring and mackerel.
"Norway has exported cod, pollock, haddock and other demersal fish for 10.3 billion kroner this year, which is 9 percent or 842 million kroner, higher than in the same period last year. The value increase is mainly due to the higher volumes of fresh and frozen products," said Ingrid Kristine Pettersen, analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council. Enditem
