LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5, (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Los Angeles made another large marijuana bust Wednesday, seizing about 27,000 illegal marijuana plants in a warehouse near the city with a street value of over 6 million U.S. dollars.
Investigators at the Narcotics Bureau Marijuana Eradication Team (MET) served a warrant at a local warehouse near Compton about 18 km south of downtown Los Angeles at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD).
Authorities seized about 27,000 illegally grown marijuana plants during the operation and arrested two suspects. LASD officials estimated the street value of these plants at about 6.1 million U.S. dollars.
This was the second large marijuana bust by MET in Compton in one week.
Last Wednesday, authorities also seized over 4,000 live plants and about 90 kg of finished marijuana product in a local warehouse, with a combined value of 7.5 million U.S. dollars, according to LASD.
With the November U.S. presidential elections fast approaching, California residents have the opportunity to legalize recreational marijuana use in the state.
Proposition 64, commonly known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, will be on the Nov. 8 ballot in California. If passed, the new law would permit adults living in the state aged 21 and above to possess and use marijuana for recreational purposes.
