Venezuela to announce in late November whether recall referendum will happen

Source: Xinhua   2016-10-06 07:16:29

CARACAS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) will announce on November 28-29 whether a recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro can take place, it announced on Wednesday.

Writing on Twitter, CNE director Tania D'amelio said that this announcement would happen after the CNE reviews the signatures collected as part of the referendum process between Oct. 26-28.

During those three days, the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) will seek to collect signatures from 20 percent of the electorate (3,893,127 people) in order to trigger a referendum.

Once the signatures are collected, the MUD will have five days to deliver them to the CNE for its inspection. The electoral body will then have 15 working days, namely between Nov. 3-23, to count and verify all the signatures.

If the number of valid signatures is above the 20 percent threshold, a referendum must happen within 90 days of being announced, according to official norms.
