SANTO DOMINGO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The president of Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council, Leopold Berlanger, announced on Wednesday that the general elections scheduled for Sunday will be postponed due to the damages the nation sustained from Hurricane Matthew.
Berlanger, during a news conference held in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday afternoon, said that the new date for the elections will be announced in the coming days.
Berlanger also indicated that electoral authorities from all over the country have eight days to evaluate the state of their facilities and after this, the new date to elect Haiti's new president will be announced.
As well as checking the Provisional Electoral Council's facilities, the authorities will verify the state of materials that are already in the offices of Haiti's 10 departments.
Hurricane Matthew's strong winds caused serious damage in many parts of the country, above all in the South, Southeast, Nippes and Gran Anse departments.
According to preliminary reports, six people were killed due to the Hurricane.
