PARIS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- French President Francois Hollande Wednesday congratulated scientist Jean-Pierre Sauvage, professor emeritus at the University of Starsbourg, for his winning of the Nobel Prize in chemistry.
In a statement, Hollande said: "This Nobel Prize's award is recognition of the excellence of French and European research," he said.
On Wednesday, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in chemistry to the three scientists: Sauvage, Scotland's Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Dutchman Bernard L. Feringa "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines."
Sauvage, 71, is an expert in supra molecular chemistry. He is currently professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg and director of research emeritus at the National Center for Scientific Research in France.
This year's prize amount is 8 million Swedish krona (930,000 U.S. dollars), to be shared equally between the laureates.
