Chinese city rewards traffic violation "whistleblowers"

WUHAN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province announced on Wednesday that a total of 835 traffic offenses reported by citizens have been confirmed and informants will be rewarded.

The city launched a reward system to encourage people to report on traffic offenders on August 15. Reporters on violations such as hit-and-run and driving with fake license plates will be rewarded with 300 yuan (45 U.S. dollars) per case, while reports of violations such as running a red light and random lane changing, will get 20 yuan for each case, according to the city's traffic management bureau.

Material offered by informants has been examined by staff with the bureau and 835 cases have been approved. A total of 17,000 yuan in rewards will be paid, and violators will be punished according to law.

Reports must have videos or photos showing information including time, location, car types and colors, license plate numbers, and complete violation procedures.
