LUSAKA, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Zambian mobile phone service subscribers have to verify their details with their service providers or risk being disconnected, said a statement released by a relevant authority Tuesday.

All mobile phone service subscribers who do not verify their details by Oct. 31, 2016 will be disconnected, said the Zambia Information and Communications Technology (ZICTA).

"The verification deadline will not be extended, therefore, any consumer whose SIM details are not fully and correctly registered and verified by October 31, 2016 will be eligible for disconnection," said the ZICTA.

The regulator has since partnered with the country's three mobile phone service providers to urge consumers to comply.

The three mobile phone service providers in Zambia are MTN Zambia, a subsidiary of South Africa's MTN Group, Airtel Zambia, a subsidiary of India's Bharti Airtel and Cell Z, a subsidiary of state-run telecommunication firm Zamtel.

The ZICTA recently said the number of mobile phone subscribers in Zambia has grown by 19.5 percent in the last eight years and that 10.9 million out of 14 million Zambians are now subscribers.
