SYDNEY, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Virgin Mobile Australia has teamed up with a local comedian to create a range of emojis after a survey found that there was a lack of symbols available on smartphone keyboards depicting the Australian way of life.
Local media reported on Tuesday that Australian comedian Dave Hughes and his wife Holly had created 20 variants of Aussie-inspired emojis depicting nonplussed moods which suggest that one is so surprised and confused that they were unsure how to react.
Some of Hughes list of Aussie emojis include an emoji for budgie smugglers, thongs, a barbecue, the Aboriginal flag, a meat pie and an emoji that symbolizes marriage equality.
Speaking about the need for more Australian emojis, Hughes said he was a big fan of the blowing kiss guy emoji because it symbolized romanticism.
"I travel a lot for work and I think it's possibly saved my relationship," Hughes said.
"You send a few of those throughout the day and hopefully when you get home you don't get stabbed," he said.
Meanwhile Virgin Mobile said it had already submitted the 20 emojis suggestions that Hughes had created with his wife to the Unicode Consortium which oversees the accepted lexicon of emojis.
If Hughes new range of Australian emojis were to be approved, they will be part of next year's smartphone keyboard update.
