Iran warns U.S. against direct military intervention in Syria

Source: Xinhua   2016-10-04 01:06:27

TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian official warned the United States against any direct military intervention against the Syrian army, Press TV reported on Monday.

It would be a "suicide" for the American forces to intervene in Syria, since the Syrian nation can fight back potential American aggression, Ali Akbar Velayati, the senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader, said.

The United States has already suffered military defeats in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it would be another significant defeat if Washington adventures to directly involve in military intervention in Syria, Velayati was quoted as saying.

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby threatened that Washington is "serious about the potential of suspending bilateral engagement with Russia" on promoting a diplomatic solution to the Syria crisis.

Iran, a major regional ally of the Syrian government in its fight against militant groups.
