YEREVAN, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- An international expo featuring "festival for tech-savvy Armenians" opened in Yerevan on Friday, according to the Armenpress news agency.

Armenia's newly-appointed Minister of Transport and Communications, Vahan Martirosyan and head of the local technological giant Ucom, Haik Yesayan were among those attending the opening ceremony. According to Karen Vardanyan, the Executive Director of the Union of Information Technologies and Enterprises that has organized the event this year, the "DigiTec" expo has more of an educative purpose this year due to the noticeable shortage of specialists in the country.

President Serzh Sargsyan also paid a visit to the expo on its first day to observe the products on display. In a separate corner, the organizers of the event showed the president the progress in the production of newest military technologies.

About 120 local companies, as well as those from the U.S., China, Russia and India were present at the expo. Among a number of famous brands were Keysight Technologies, VMware, PicsArt, Ucom, Joomag, VOLO, Festo, Rusbase, Monitis, IUNetworks, ArmSoft, Huawei, as well as education centers of Tumo and Armat.

In the frameworks of the expo, the Russian accelerator GenerationS will hold a contest for all technological startups. A forum of "Innovation & Invention" will also be held, and a big display of the works of Robofest will be shown as well.

The expo is expected to last until October 2. Digitec has been held annually since 2005.
