BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesman for cross-Strait affairs on Friday said national reunification is a "historical inevitability as the Chinese nation marches towards its great rejuvenation."

Asked to comment on an open letter by Taiwan's current leader Tsai Ing-wen to members of her Democratic Progressive Party in which Tsai urged resistance to pressure exerted by the mainland, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the momentum of historic development could not be stopped.

"All secessionist attempts to seek 'Taiwan independence' are doomed to failure," Ma said.
