Greek Olympician Pigi Devetzis to appeal loss of medals to Court of Arbitration for Sport

ATHENS, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Retired Greek triple jump athlete Pigi Devetzis will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport IAAF's and IOC's decision to strip her of the medals she had won at the Osaka World Championships in 2007 and the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 on doping charges, her lawyer announced in Athens.

The International Assosiation of Athletics Federations and the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday cancelled Devetzis' results for that period, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

"We have requested from IOC more data regarding the tests of samples for the Beijing Games...The Olympic medalist will bring the case to CAS," her lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos said in a press release.

Devetzis had won the silver medal in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the bronze in the 2008 Games and another bronze in Osaka.

Last year Greece's Athletics Federation (SEGAS) had announced that Greek authorities were formally notified by IAAF that Devetzis was tested positive for a banned substance in 2007.

The latest re-analysis of her samples from 2007 and 2008 tested positive for a banned substance so she was retrospectively disqualified from both competitions.

Devetzis insists that she has never used doping substances.

The athlete retired after IAAF gave her a two-year ban from taking part in tournaments following her refusal to submit a sample to anti-doping controllers in May 2009 in Ukraine.
