WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least three persons were killed and more than 100 people were injured when a tansit train crashed into Hoboken station, New Jersey on Thursday morning, with multiple passengers still trapped in the wreckage, said emergency responders and local media.

The train "went right through the barriers and into the reception area," Radio station WFAN reported.

Pictures on social media show that the station roof has collapsed amid extensive damage due to the crash.

The incident took place just before 9:00 am local time (1300 GMT) during the rush hour when many riders were on board the train.

Hoboken station, which sits 11 kilometers outside New York city, is a hub for commuters to switch for Manhattan.

Minutes after the crush, the Hoboken police chief told local media that there might be "mass casualties".

All rail services have been suspended in and out of Hoboken after the crash.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
