Tokyo shares open higher on rising oil prices

TOKYO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares opened higher Thursday on strong U.S. stocks due to rising oil prices overnight.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 145.77 points, or 0.89 percent, from Wednesday to 16,611.17.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.96 points, or 0.60 percent, at 1,338.73.

Gainers were led by mining, iron and steel, and oil and coal product issues.
