Veld fire destroys 4,800 hectares in Namibia

WINDHOEK, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- An outbreak of veld fire in the outskirts of the capital, Windhoek's northern western mountainous area, has blazed through an estimated 4,800 hectares of land, according to a city official.

City of Windhoek, Public relations officer, Lydia Amutenya on Wednesday said that the fire is reported to have started on Monday evening, specifically in the area between Mountain Lodge and Daan Viljoen.

"The affected area is mostly mountains and farmland. Due to its structural surface and limited farm roads; there is a limited access to the affected area," she said.

Currently, the City of Windhoek firefighting teams have been deployed on the ground and has so far received assistance from the Namibia Police, who have provided a helicopter for aerial view assessment, monitoring and directs the firefighting team on the ground to critical areas and hot spots.

"The estimated burned area in Ongos farm is 4800 hectares. We received assistance from the Brakwater community and we managed to protect Brakwater area, Daan Viljoen and Mountain lodge," she added.

Meanwhile, Amutenya said that no casualties or damage to infrastructures has been reported, except the destruction of vegetation on the mountains.
