Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

Source: Xinhua   2016-09-28 20:09:01

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's stocks retreated Wednesday despite a previous mild rebound buoyed by robust business profit data as investors took a wait-and-see attitude before the upcoming holiday.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.34 percent to finish at 2,987.86 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.09 percent lower at 10,467.16 points. China's NASDAQ-style ChiNext Index edged down 0.05 percent to close at 2,139.63 points.

The lackluster performance could be attributed to thin trading. Most investors opted against big transactions before the week-long National Day holiday that starts on Saturday.

Total turnover on the two bourses slipped to 305.2 billion yuan (45.77 billion U.S. dollars), the lowest level in four months.

The declines were led by the textile machinery and oil sectors. China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, a heavyweight owned by the country's largest oil producer Sinopec Group, dropped 0.83 percent to 4.77 yuan per share.
