BRUSSELS, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- European Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva has called China's hosting of the G20 Summit a "huge success", saying it has reflected China's enormous economic and social progress.

"China's hosting the G20 has delivered a clear message that it will do in the global arena what it has done at home," Georgieva said in a speech at the reception organized by the China mission to the European Union to celebrate the 67th National Day of the People's Republic of China, which falls on Oct. 1.

"It was impressive to see, on the eve of the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China's role in anchoring us all in the fight against climate change," she said.

Georgieva welcomed China's commitment in tackling climate change, saying China's steady resolve has reflected the country's determination to deal with severe global challenges.

"For me, this is an action that China has taken the lead in and it will be beneficial to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren," said Georgieva.

Beside the environment, Georgieva said the G20 Hangzhou Summit focusing on the global economy regaining its vitality was welcomed by all participants.

In her speech, Georgieva highly praised China's economic development. "We have witnessed China's progress, rooted in the fastest sustained expansion by a major economy in history, which lifted more than 800 million people out of poverty. China reached all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and made a major contribution to the achievement of the MDGs globally."

She said that the way China brings economic vitality was an inspiration for the EU Fund for Strategic Investment, which the EU is considering to expand internally and externally.

"In this regard, our European External Investment Plan is a tool that can reinforce our mutual cooperation," notably with the Belt and Road Initiative, she said.

Talking about China's 13th Five-year Plan, Georgieva praised China's measures to restructure its economy, improving environmental quality and energy efficiency and continue to reduce poverty.

"This plan will carry out reforms, which we know are not easy, but it will enable us to do more together," she said.

Moreover, Georgieva recalled her experience as the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs. "What I was most impressed with was the enthusiasm of my Chinese counterparts to put this expertise to the service of mankind and to work for humanity, prosperity and peace," she said.

Talking about China-EU ties, Georgieva concluded, "there is joint determination for economic development and prosperity, but more than anything else it is our shared humanity. This shared humanity reflects our joint goal to live in peace in our world."

Her views were echoed by Yang Yanyi, Chinese Ambassador to the EU, who also noted China's great progress and increasing contributions to the world.

Yang said the successful hosting of the G20 Hangzhou Summit has offered new solutions to improving global economic and financial governance and unlocking a new driving force for growing the global economy.

Thanks to reform, innovation, adjustment and transformation, the Chinese economy has maintained stability and performed within the appropriate range, Yang said.

"We have advanced the Belt and Road Initiative to build greater connectivity and provide strong impetus to regional development and integration," said Yang.

In terms of China-EU relations, Yang said that the 18th China-EU Summit demonstrated the shared vision to strengthen China-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Looking ahead, Yang warned that the international environment remains complex and challenging and downward economic pressure is not to be underestimated.

"We have stood up to challenges," she said, stressing that China has the confidence and capability to achieve steady progress in pursuing the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development and achieve the main economic and social development targets set for this year.

The ambassador pledged that China will continue to shoulder its due international responsibility and make an even greater contribution to the happiness of peoples and world peace and prosperity.
