KHARTOUM, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Sudan reiterated its refusal to become a base for any armed opposition against South Sudan on Monday, according to the Sudan Tribune.
"Sudan is a basic member in the tripartite committee assigned by the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development in Africa (IGAD) to follow up implementation of South Sudan peace deal," Ibrahim Ghandour, Sudan's foreign minister, was quoted as saying.
"Sudan will not be a starting point for any armed opposition against South Sudan. Sudan has been an active player in all initiatives aiming at achieving peace in South Sudan," he added.
Ghandour further reiterated that Sudan's intent regarding peace in South Sudan stems from the fact that peace in both countries can only be achieved when it is attained in the other country.
Sudan and South Sudan often exchange accusations of supporting and sheltering active armed groups in both countries.
On August 22, both sides agreed to settle all outstanding security issues between them within 21 days. However, that agreement has yet to be implemented.
