HANOI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The black boxes, which record the location and speed of cars in which they are installed, helped to track down more than 4,000 cars involved in traffic violations in Vietnam since the beginning of 2016, according the Ministry of Transport's Directorate for Roads of Vietnam on Friday.

The in-vehicle device helps monitor the vehicle's location, speed and acceleration, and is capable of transmitting the information to a central database, said the directorate.

Since devices were put into operation in 2014, tens of thousands of drivers have been penalized. Vehicle owners who broke the law were ordered off the road for a month and had their licenses revoked, or in cases involving commercial vehicles, had their business licenses withdrawn, reported the state-run news agency VNA on Friday.

According to the directorate, black boxes were installed on 136,000 vehicles nationwide so far and the figure is expected to reach 1 million by 2017.
