RABAT, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan security forces have seized more than 80 tons of cannabis since the beginning of this year, police said in a statement on Wednesday.
During the same period in 2015, Morocco seized nearly 60.5 tons of cannabis, the statement said.
The operations led by security forces during the same period also led to seizure of 316 kg of cocaine.
Despite efforts in the past decade to crack down on cannabis harvesting, Morocco remains the world's largest producer of the cannabis resin.
According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's 2016 World Drug Report, Morocco ranked first among 129 countries in terms of cannabis production from 2009 to 2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan. Enditem
