UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- President Borut Pahor of Slovenia said here Wednesday that his government will continue efforts to translate its "World Bee Day" initiative into reality in order to ensure food security, biodiversity and sustainable development.
The statement came as Pahor was speaking at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its second day here Wednesday.
"Slovenia is also continuing its efforts to have 20 May proclaimed as 'World Bee Day'," the president said.
Slovenia expects to present a resolution during the 72nd session of the General Assembly, which will open in September 2017, "as it believes that strengthening common care for bees and other pollinators is needed to ensure food security, biodiversity and sustainable development," he said.
Slovenia recognizes the importance of bees and beekeeping for ensuring food security as well as preserving the entire ecosystem and natural biodiversity. The Slovenian government strives to preserve and protect the bees in our territory and throughout the European Union.
"World Bee Day" is sought in order to raise the global awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping.
In April 2015, Slovenia proposes to the United Nations that the May 20 should be declared as "World Bee Day." The initiative needs to be approved by the 193-member General Assembly.
