Czech gov't approves proposal to ratify Paris Agreement on reducing emissions

PRAGUE, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Czech government on Wednesday approved a proposal to ratify the United Nations Paris climate agreement in which countries pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to slow down global warming and mitigate its consequences.

Posting on Twitter, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said the Czech government approved the proposal to ratify the Paris Agreement and to join the previously agreed global goals of climate protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Sobotka noted the government would prepare a law on reducing emissions and greenhouse gases after the adoption of the ratification proposal.

The document will go to the two houses of Czech parliament and to President Milos Zeman for approval.

Zeman said in December 2015 he would sign the Paris Agreement.

The European Commission has presented a proposal for the European Union to ratify the Paris Agreement, which is to take effect as of 2020. The EU Environment Council will discuss the proposal at its meeting on Sept. 30. Enditem
