KATHMANDU, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Himalaya Airlines, a Nepal-China joint venture company, announced on Tuesday that it is conducting a direct flight from Kathmandu to Colombo, Sri Lanka starting from Oct.1.

The airlines earlier conducted two non-scheduled flights to the island nation, the company said it would conduct scheduled flights three days in a week.

The flight will take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday while return flight will also take place on the same day, according to the company.

This will re-establish Nepal's direct air link with Sri Lanka after more than three decades on regular basis.

Nepal's national flag carrier, Nepal Airlines, operated direct flights to Colombo during the 1980s. But the carrier suspended its operations following the armed rebellion by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the island nation.

Since then, direct air links have been cut between the two countries until Himalaya Airline flied the chartered flight on April 12 this year.

Colombo is the second destination for the newly established airline after Doha, Qatar.
