68th Emmy Awards ceremony attracted record-low audience since 1982

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary data showed that the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony has drawn a record-low viewership since 1982 when individual viewership figures were released for the first time, said an report.

Some 11.3 million people watched the ceremony, according to an annual report released on Monday by Nielsen, a global information and measurement company based in the United Kingdom.

The previous lowest record was 11.87 million for last year's ceremony, which was aired on Fox channel and had the benefit of following an American National Football League game, one of the most popular sports game in the United States.

This year's ceremony was held on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, aired by ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, an American television host and producer.

Viewership of this year's ceremony was down 5 percent from a year earlier, and it was the third consecutive year that ratings had dropped since the ceremony attracted 17.7 million viewers in 2013 when it was aired on CBS and hosted by the American actor and producer Neil Patrick Harris.

The Emmy Awards telecast annually rotates among the four major broadcast networks.

The record-low viewership follows a pattern of dropping viewership for awards shows. Viewership for ABC's Oscars ceremony in February was the lowest since 2008, while viewership for CBS' coverage of the Grammy Awards earlier that month was the lowest since 2009.

The highest viewership figure for the Emmy Awards ceremony was 35.8 million in 1986. It came in an era when there were only three major broadcast networks and viewership for cable was much smaller.

In Los Angeles, the Emmy Awards telecast averaged a 9.5 rating. New York was the top-rated market with a 14.5 rating. Chicago ranked the fifth with a 10.3 rating. Each rating point represents a percentage of the TV households in a market, said Los Angeles Times.

Final data are scheduled to be announced on Tuesday but are not expected to be much different from the preliminary figures released on Monday.
