5.0-magnitude earthquake hits NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 at the Richter scale hit parts of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, local authorities said.

The Pakistan meteorological department said on its website that the quake hit the country at 11:26:27 (UTC) with the epicenter determined at Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region.

The depth of the earthquake was determined at 180 km whereas its longitude was 71.27 east and latitude was 36.72 north, the department said.

Local Urdu TV channel Samaa said that the trembler jolted Swat, Malakand, Battagram districts of the province and their adjoining areas.

No loss of life of property was immediately reported in the earthquake, but it created panic among the people who rushed out of their houses.

Pakistan is located in one of the most earthquake prone areas with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Geographically, the country lies in the collision zone of the India tectonic plate to the south and the Eurasian plate to the north.
