KIEV, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least six combatants were killed and fifteen others wounded in clashes in eastern Ukraine in the past day, officials from the conflicting parties said Tuesday.

The figure marked the highest daily casualty toll in the conflict since the new round of truce was established on Sept. 1.

Particularly, Ukrainian military spokesman Olexandr Motuzyanyk said two government troopers were killed during the fighting with independence-seeking insurgents in Lugansk region, while another soldier was killed in an artillery attack on Ukrainian forces near Chermalyk village in Donetsk region.

Besides, fifteen government servicemen were wounded, while one went missing in the restive area over the past 24 hours, Motuzyanyk said.

Separately, a senior insurgent commander Eduard Basurin said three pro-independence fighters were killed in the clashes with the government army near Gorlivka town in Donetsk region in the past day.

The renewed military attacks, for which both sides have blamed each other, raised fears that the 29-month-old conflict may escalate again after less than two weeks of a relative calm.

The fighting between government troops and insurgents has been underway since April 2014, killing more than 9,500 people and wounding some 22,000 others.
