SARIPUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Security forces have gunned down a would-be suicide bomber in Saripul city, 350 km north of Kabul, capital of Afghanistan on Monday, provincial governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat said.

"A terrorist who tied explosive device in his body and was attempting to target the governor was shot dead by security forces and his vicious design has been foiled," governor Wahdat told reporters here.

According to the official, the terrorist wanted to blow himself up on the way where the governor along with his team was going to a mosque to offer Eidul Adha prayer.

Afghans offered prayers for Eidul Adha, the largest annual religious festival amid tight security across the country on Monday.
