MELBOURNE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Melbourne's rail network has been rated the worst in Australia for the fifth straight year, a survey has found.

The annual survey, undertaken by consumer research firm Canstar Blue, found that Melbourne's network ranked the worst in all eight categories used to measure customer satisfaction.

Melbourne's Metro Trains received an overall rating of three stars, with Perth's TransPerth leading the nation with a perfect five stars while rail networks in Sydney, Adelaide and Queensland all received four.

Topping the list of Melbourne commuters' grievances was the controversial Myki ticketing system which received only two stars despite being the cheapest system in the country on average.

Simon Downes, editor of Canstar Blue, said Metro had failed to significantly improve its service in its seven years of running Melbourne's trains.

"In the five years of these ratings we have not seen any significant improvement from Metro Trains," Downes told Fairfax Media on Monday.

"Metro customers clearly think they're paying too much and are generally disappointed with the overall service they receive. The ticketing system is a particular focus of anger and frustration."

The survey, which also asked the 6000 adults polled for their pet hates on trains, found that Melbourne passengers were most frustrated with other passengers being rude or aggressive, the hygiene of other passengers and overcrowded trains.

One survey respondent described their commute as "squashed like sardines in a can."

The Canstar Blue poll came as Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Monday that a new fleet of high-capacity trains would be built in Victoria.

The train construction project, worth 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, is just the first stage of Andrews' 8.2 billion U.S. dollar Melbourne Metro Rail project. Enditem
