5.3 Richter scale quake shakes Macedonia

SKOPJE, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Macedonia on Sunday afternoon, Macedonia's seismology observatory and U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake epicenter was in the region of Skopje, at a 2 km depth. No reports of injuries or serious damages have been reported so far.

The tremors caused panic among citizens who fled their houses while many shopping malls were empty.

The quake was also felt in neighboring country Albania, local media there reported Sunday afternoon.

Meantime, Macedonia's seismology observatory informed that this was the third quake shaking Macedonia as two other milder quakes hit the country early in the morning.

The first quake hit at 6:58 a.m. local time measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, while the second struck a minute later measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale.
