NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Greta Friedman, the nurse kissed by a sailor in the iconic photo taken in Times Square on V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) in 1945, passed away on Thursday, local media reported.
Friedman died of pneumonia at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
She was a 21-year-old dental assistant when she was spotted by George Mendonsa and planted a kissed by the sailor on Aug. 14, 1945, known as V-J Day, when people thronged Manhattan streets to celebrate the victory.
The photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, a photographer for Life Magazine, became one of the most famous cultural icons of the 20th century.
According to her family, Friedman will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, next to her late husband, Dr. Misha Friedman.
Mendonsa, now lives in Newport, Rhode Island.
