SYDNEY, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- An 18-year-old teenager has been charged for allegedly making terror threats at Australia's Sydney Opera House forecourt.

New South Wales police in a statement on Friday said the man, from Narwee in Sydney's southwest, had raised the alarm among security staff and members of the public after he was seen with a backpack at the foregrounds of the Sydney Opera House on Thursday morning.

"The man's backpack was seized and is undergoing forensic examination," police said.

"Officers from the NSW Police Terrorism Investigations Squad commenced an investigation into the incident."

Police said a search warrant was later carried out at the man's home where a number of items were seized for examination.

Police said the man was interviewed and charged overnight with threatening to destroy or damage property.

"Police are reassuring the community there is no ongoing threat in relation to this incident," the statement said.

The man has been refused bail and is due to appear at Sydney's Central Local Court later on Friday.
