NEW DELHI, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Several persons have been injured in a stampede that happened at a naval base in Mumbai on Friday, where over 10,000 youths had gathered for a recruitment drive.
"Most of them sustained minor injuries in the stampede at INS Hamla, the naval base in Mumbai's Malad area, except four who had to be taken to a local hospital," a senior police official said.
The stampede was triggered when more candidates turned up than the expected 4,000 for the recuritment drive and police had to charge batons to control them when they tried to enter the base all at once.
In a statement, the Indian Navy has said that the situation was handled very efficiently by the local police and Navy officials.
The police have ordered a probe into the incident, the official said.
