MADRID, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Spanish soldier died in a traffic accident in Iraq on Wednesday, the Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed on Thursday.
According to Spanish media reports, 25-year-old Aaron Vidal Lopez was killed and two others injured when a truck belonging to the Iraqi armed forces collided with a Lince armored car, which was waiting to escort a convoy into the military base of Besmayah, around 40 kilometers to the east of Baghdad.
Vidal Lopez, who was standing in a shooting position in the Lince, was thrown out of the armored car against the truck. His body will be transported back to Spain on Friday.
He is the first Spanish soldier to die in Iraq since Spanish troops returned to the country in January 2015 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, which currently involves around 300 Spaniards at the bases of Besmayah, Taji and at Baghdad airport.
