MADRID, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The first seven days of September have seen parts of Spain sweltering in a heatwave which has seen record high temperatures, the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) informed Wednesday.
The first days of September have seen all of Spain sweating under an unrelenting sun and with the heat climbing to never before seen levels for the month.
This has led to an orange level warning to be issued over the effects of the heat and a maximum alert for possible wildfires in rural areas.
Monday saw the city of Ourense in the north-west region of Galicia suffer temperatures of 41.4 degrees centigrade, 1.6 degrees above the previous high for the month, nearby Pontevedra also saw a record high of 37 degrees, while in Teruel in northeastern Spain, the mercury climbed to 36.8 centigrade, 0.6 degrees above the previous record.
Meanwhile, other cities, such as Segovia and Ciudad Real in the heart of Spain, Huelva in the southwest and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, beat the maximum temperatures measured during the 30-year-period between 1971 to 2000.
As well, recent days have also seen minimum temperatures rise with record high minimum temperatures for the month also set.
Pamplona, Huesca, Avila, Badajoz, Logrono and Valladolid all experienced the highest night time minimums experienced for September while in Zamora, Tuesday night temperatures failed to drop below 22.4 degrees - 2.4 degrees higher than the previous highest minimum. Enditem
