MADRID, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Pedro Almodovar's latest film "Julieta" has been chosen by the Spanish Film Academy as Spain's candidate for Best foreign language film in the 2017 Oscars.

Julieta was chosen ahead of El Olivo (The Olive Tree) by Iciar Bollain and La Novia (The Bride) by director Paula Ortiz.

Almodovar's 20th film in a long career, which has seen him win Oscars for Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About my Mother) and Habla con Ella (Talk to Her), is a melodrama centered mainly around characters which tends to produce his best work.

Julieta is more serious than some of his work and tells the story of a mother and her long wait to see her daughter who abandoned her after her 18th birthday.

The lead role in the film is taken by two different actresses, Adriana Ugarte, who plays the young Julieta, and Emma Suarez, who plays the older version of the same character.

The film was released in Spain on April 8, 2016 to generally favorable reviews and has earned around 13 million U.S. dollars at the box office in Spain and abroad.
