SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korea on Monday denounced the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its test-firing of Rodong ballistic missiles that are believed to have landed in Japan's air defense identification zone.

Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement that the DPRK's nuclear and missile developments are a provocative act showing threat to the Korean peninsula as well as neighboring countries and the international community.

The statement said the missile launches were in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Pyongyang test-fired three Rodong ballistic missiles into the East Sea, traveling some 1,000 km and falling into Japan's air defense identification zone. Rodong is a mid-range ballistic missile that has a range of 1,000 km to 1,300 km.

The missile launches came less than two weeks after the DPRK test-launched a ballistic missile from a submarine on Aug. 24 that also landed in Japan's air defense identification zone.

Three Rodong ballistic missiles, fired by the DPRK on Aug. 3, also fell into Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

UN Security Council resolutions ban Pyongyang from any use of nuclear and ballistic missile technologies.
