China-hosted meeting in Ethiopia seeks to strengthen cooperation

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A China-hosted conference was convened Thursday in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, with aim of further strengthening economic cooperation between China and Ethiopia.

The Conference on China(Guangdong)-Ethiopia Economic and Trade Cooperation, was organized by south China's Guangdong government. It deliberated on issues related to industrial zones, construction material and textiles to facilitating communication.

Zhu Xiaodan, Guangdong province governor who led a visiting delegation, attended the meeting.

Zhu noted that the frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries help strengthen bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

He said his delegation was here in Ethiopia to implement the agreements reached by the leaders of the two nations, and enhance friendship and exchanges.

Speaking on the occasion, La Yifan, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, highlighted the role of the conference in further enhancing the relationship between the two countries.

Stating that Guangdong province has had high record of economic and social development in China, the ambassador said the visit and the conference would further push forward the economic cooperation and business ties between China and Ethiopia.

Arkebe Equbay, Special Advisor to the Ethiopian Prime Minister, said Ethiopia and China have been cooperating and partnering towards achieving common goals of improving the livelihoods of their peoples.

He said that the Chinese investment in manufacturing and industrial zone development has created thousands of jobs for Ethiopians.

Equbay also hailed the contribution of Chinese companies in Ethiopia in job creation as well as in knowledge and technology transfer in the country's manufacturing and rail transport sectors.

On Wednesday, Zhu had discussions with the Ethiopian Prime Minister on issues related to manufacturing, trade, and tourism.

Expressing his province's keen interest to cooperate with Ethiopia, the governor mentioned four areas of cooperation, namely, production capacity, infrastructure, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
