UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday extended his best wishes to Brazilian President Michel Temer as he began his tenure earlier in the day.
The secretary-general, in a statement issued by his spokesman, said that he has taken note of the decision by the Brazilian Senate to impeach President Dilma Rousseff and the subsequent swearing in of acting President Michel Temer as president of Brazil.
"He trusts that under President Temer's leadership, Brazil and the United Nations will continue their traditional close partnership," the statement said.
"The secretary-general thanks President Rousseff for her commitment and support to the work of the United Nations throughout her tenure," the statement added.
A few short hours after Rousseff was impeached as president of Brazil, her former vice president and political ally-turned-enemy, Michel, was sworn in on Wednesday as her successor.
Temer will serve as president until Dec.31, 2018.
Shortly before the swearing-in, Rousseff vowed "a firm and energetic resistance against the putschist government."
Speaking from the presidential palace, accompanied by allied politicians and union leaders, Rousseff said the Senate "had taken a decision which enters into the history of great injustices."
