Tokyo shares open sharply higher on yen's depreciation after U.S. Fed chief speech

TOKYO, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares opened sharply higher Monday on the weaker yen following a speech before the weekend by the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen indicating a near-term rate hike.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 342.58 points, or 2.09 percent, from Friday to 16,703.29.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 25.07 points, or 1.95 percent, at 1,312.97.

Gainers were led by insurance, transportation equipment and mining issues.
