Forest hotspots drop in Indonesia as efforts to fight fire stepped up

JAKARTA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The number of forest fire hotspots decreased significantly on Saturday as the government has boosted measures to douse fires.

The Terra and Aqua satellite from NASA on Saturday detected zero hotspot in Sumatra Island of western Indonesia, the nearest fire-affected areas to Singapore, falling from 51 on Friday, the meteorology and geophysics agency said on its website.

In Borneo Island of western and central parts of Indonesia, 18 new hotspots were found after the satellite detected zero hotspot on Friday.

Seven hotspots were detected in Java Island of western Indonesia.

Indonesian has deployed 7,200 personnel, three planes and three helicopters to fight forest and agriculture fires from air and land, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency.
