ULAN BATOR, Aug 24 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian government on Wednesday appealed to members of the public and students to actively help in the harvest before the colder weather comes.
An appeal signed by Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Minister Sergelen Purev said bad weather may hinder progress in harvesting.
The ministry also encouraged agricultural farms and businesses to hire students and youth to harvest crops as soon as possible.
Mongolia is about to harvest wheat and vegetables from 491,200 hectares of land. The harvest is good this year, but much rain is expected later so it may get cold earlier than usual, raising the risk of frost affecting the harvesting of wheat and vegetables, the ministry said.
The Mongolian agricultural sector is largely dominated by traditional livestock herding, but the government has been encouraging the development wheat and vegetables in recent years.
