SUVA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tongan Deputy Prime Minister and Climate Change Minister Siaosi Sovaleni told parliament that King Tupou VI had consented to the decision to ratify the Paris agreement on climate change after the Pacific island kingdom signed the treaty in April, Radio and TV Tonga reported Wednesday.

Tonga is expected to ratify the Paris agreement on Sept. 21, said the report.

The Paris agreement was reached in 2015 by parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aiming to hold the global average rise in temperature below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and preferably below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited world leaders to submit their ratification documents of the Paris agreement on climate change at a special event on Sept. 21.
