TOKYO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar and a retreat of prices for cruse oil created a dour market mood and saw investors offload issues.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 100.83 points, or 0.61 percent, from Monday to close the day at 16,497.36.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 6.12 points, or 0.47 percent, to finish at 1,297.56.

Notable issues that lost ground by the close of play comprised insurance, iron and steel and mining-linked stocks and the day's turnover was 1,818.1 billion yen (18.16 billion U.S. dollars).
