Vietnam earns 2 gold medals at Int'l Olympiad in Informatics

HANOI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese students have won two gold medals at the 28th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), said General Department of Education Testing and Accreditation under Vietnam's Ministry of Education on Friday.

All four students in Vietnamese delegation won medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze, Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA quoted the department as saying.

According to unofficial rankings based on the number of gained medals, Vietnam ranks seventh among 81 countries and regions participating in the event.

The IOI is an annual informatics competition for schoolchildren. It first took place in Bulgaria in 1989.

This year, the IOI is held in Russia's Kazan on Aug. 12-19.

As many as 308 contestants have joined the competition, with 154 gaining medals. Three countries managing to earn most gold medals include China, Russia and the United States, said the department.
