U.S. granted re-run of women's 4x100m relay heat in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The United States have been granted a re-run of their women's 4x100m relay heat at the Rio Olympics after officials said they were obstructed.

The defending Olympic champions dropped the baton during the second exchange between Allyson Felix and English Gardner in the second heat on Thursday.

The Americans protested, claiming Brazilian Franciela Krasucki bumped Felix before the handover.

In a statement, officials said the race referee deemed Felix to have been obstructed after reviewing video replays.

The U.S. will run alone in the same lane at 8pm local time on Thursday, needing to beat the time of 42.70 seconds set by Canada and China to make Friday's final.

Jamaica qualified fastest in 41.79 followed by Britain (41.93) and Germany (42.18).
